A big #FoodbankFriday thank you to the congregation at High Street Presbyterian for their recent donations to Antrim Foodbank, including £778 to help alleviate Fuel Poverty in our Town.
What is Fuel Poverty?
Fuel poverty is when a person needs to spend more than 10 per cent of their household income on fuel. Around four million people in the UK are in the grip of fuel poverty, which means they can’t afford to heat their homes to the temperature needed to keep warm and healthy.
Operated by the Oasis Antrim Community Support Hub, Antrim Foodbank is a part of the Trussell Trust network of food banks. Garry Lemon, policy director at the Trussell Trust, said:
With inflation reaching a thirty-year high, our social security system is at breaking point, and essential costs across the board are rising rapidly. Overall inflation is only set to increase further this spring.
Fionnuala O’Donnell, Project Manager with Antrim Foodbank, said:
Last year, Antrim Foodbank helped 4,285 people in crisis in our Town, including almost 2,000 children. This is an increase of over 62% on 2020.
Food poverty and fuel poverty go hand in hand. Thanks to the congregation at High Street Presbyterian, we’ll be able to purchase vouchers with SPAR that can be redeemed for gas or electricity. We’ll also add to our credit with Riverside Fuels to help local people in crisis with a 200l oil fill.
How can you help?
